Title I is a federally funded program designed to support Kindergarten through twelfth grade students in reading and mathematics. It is the largest federal aid program to our nation’s schools. At KMS, students who show significant below grade-Level reading skills are enrolled in the Reading Enrichment program. The reading enrichment personnel work closely with classroom teachers throughout the year to identify highest priority needs at KMS. We use classroom-based assessments to prompt any further testing that is not addressed in our initial data collection. KMS is a middle school that serves grades 6th through 8th. The 6th grade students are first to get our attention at the beginning of the year. We pour our testing resources at them starting at the end of their 5th grade year. We receive Title 1 information from every elementary school that populates our middle school. That data may include scores from AIMSweb tests, SBAC tests, (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium), and any elementary interventions that have been used. Therefore, many 6th graders needing intervention are already designated upon their entry at KMS. We begin our formal one-on-one testing (using the Ekwall-Shanker Comprehension screener, Quick Screen Decoding list, and REWARDS Decoding Screener) with these designated students. The entire 6th grade class is given the AIMSweb Reading and the GATES reading assessments in the first month of school. Any scores of a year or more behind Grade Level then provide us our population of students for round two of one-on-one testing. Our final round of one-on-one testing happens throughout the year with any students that enroll at KMS mid-year, or who are recommended by Team teachers due to less-than-proficient scores, classroom performance, or other reading classroom indicators. All students enrolled in the KMS Reading Enrichment program are generally assessed again both mid-year, and at year-end in attempts to diligently track and record their progress
This same process is followed for 7th and 8th grade students, with the exceptions that only students identified as a priority will take the AIMSweb reading test, in order to monitor their reading progress. The GATES (a scan-tron Reading vocabulary and comprehension assessment) is given in the winter trimester..
All KMS data is compiled in a Google Sheet and shared with all stakeholders.
