How do you earn a Civics Distinction?
The Civic Distinction recognizes graduating seniors who complete a course of study
emphasizing Social Studies knowledge, both inside and outside of the classroom. To be
eligible for this distinction, a student must complete all requirements outlined below.
Students earning this distinction are eligible to wear a charcoal colored cord at
graduation.
To apply for Civics Distinction, the following requirements must be met:
Successful completion of four credits of Social Studies courses, including sitting for the IB test in either Global Politics or IB History.
Cumulative GPA of 3.2.
Utilize civics skills outside of school by completing one of the following options:
Participate in speech and debate for at least two years, one of which occurred during the student’s junior or senior year. Attending the State Tournament during one of those years or receiving a speech and debate letter is required.
Participate in Model UN for at least two years, one of which occurred during the student’s junior or senior year. The student will be required to have attended the Model UN conference in Missoula during one of those years.
The student must be in good standing in the activity in which they participated. You may not have been disciplined during the activity to the level of removal from competition.
Submit an application, including a transcript, which shows the student has met the requirements. Application due by the second Friday in May.
