Land, Culture, Broader Perspectives

The fourth blanket - and the one that wraps around all elements of the child - is their sense of, and connection to, a broader perspective and may include your culture, language, faith and the environment.

Connections to students' own perspectives further strengthen their resilience. Valuing diverse perspectives and worldviews is immeasurable. It will ultimately have an impact on students' families and community and continue to ripple out from there into the world that we all share.

Title: The Genius Hour

Big Idea: We can effect positive change

Essential Questions: Essential Questions are individualized to each student. Mine is:

What is LGBTQ+ and how is it viewed in the community?

Real World Connection:

Genius hour allows for authentic learning in that each child pursues a project or inquiry that is personally relevant. Students share with an authentic audience.

Genius hour allows for authentic learning in that we pursue a project or inquiry that is personally relevant and then share with an authentic audience. We can decide to learn about something; (history, current event), Learn to do (computer skill, Learn to make; health care products, windmill) learn to create; (art project or story), learn to test; (a science experiment, learn to change the environment). Each project contributes to our broader understanding in some way.

Le Grand Debat Pour L’election Federale (federal election) was a project completed by our class at Spring Creek Community School.

Essential Questions: How can we educate, provoke, inspire our community regarding the federal election?

Real World Connection:We put on a mock debate between party leaders for parents. The research and debate in class prior to the actual show provoked a lot of discussions around the dinner table, according to parent comments. Some even told me they voted in the election due to our project, and felt more informed because of our research and debate

Process:

To learn about democracy, government, parties, voting (CIVIX videos). Learn the French vocabulary necessary for this project. Learn the party positions on 3 specific topics chosen by the students. We provided at-level reading material on these topics for students to use as research to decisions on how they would vote. Beginner language learners (grade 5s) created weather and sportscasts and had a scripts to learn. More experienced language learners took on the key roles of party leaders and MC for the debate, etc. We watched parts of the real debates, and practiced presenting in French with correct pronunciation. It was fun to discuss the anglophone party leaders and how they had to learn French to be MPs. Students committed to a party position and after the debate, participated in StudentVote. This was really cool. We got sent real polling booths, ballots and paraphenalia. Parents ran the polling station and the debate was fierce. Our debate was extremely highly attended in the library. It was standing room only. Probably 2/3 of our students’ parents attended. I always try to run presentations of learning on Friday afternoons, as we seem to get great turnouts at this time.
