Community

The third blanket is the child's sense of, and connection to, their local community. When students feel that they belong and have connections to their community at school or in their neighborhoods, they are part of something bigger than themselves.

Positive mentors and role-models cultivate these community connections.

Title: The Trail Project

Big Idea: Accessible Trails are Good for Communities

Essential Questions:

How can an accessible trail improve a community?

Real World Connection:

This project was carried out in partnership with the trail society. The pr0ject transformed a trail that is used by the public.

Process:

Students brainstormed how a project to make the Mike Weeks trail wheelchair accessible would allow them to develop all five competencies. They met with a member of the community who described how accessing the trail would make a difference in his life. Students worked with the Squamish Trail Society to plan, gather and organize materials and tools and build the trail. Students spent class time preparing, calculating and planning the building day. The work was completed over the course of a day and a half.
