Guiding Questions:
Communication is important for several reasons including understanding other people's opinions. I find that just talking isn't a very good way to communicate, but that you also have to understand how others see you. I know that in our school, many people communicate in a variety of ways like using their hands, bodies, tone in their voice, and through actions.
Also, it's important to understand communication when using technology. Sometimes, you can mean one thing but it might be misunderstood by someone else. That's why emojis are good.
This is a picture from our service trip to India. We went to India to meet with other students from around the World to discuss ideas on how to help India with their pollution. This was very interesting because we had to think of how we were going to communicate with people in India. I found that non-verbal communication and using our bodies to communicate worked really well. For example, when it was time to eat, we would pretend to scoop food into our mouths. That told others we were hungry.
One of my strengths is that I am an engaged listener. This means that I maintain eye contact with the person speaking and confirm what I hear with short reaffirming responses.
Right now I need help with my managing my stress in the moment. Sometimes when someone is trying to speak over me, I become frustrated and have difficulty communicating my thoughts.
I'm interested to see how my work on the debate club will help me become more assertive, but in a respectful way.
My next steps include being more attentive to my non-verbal communication and how this impacts the behaviors of others. I think I'll try a couple of experiments where I'll do different non-verbal communication things to see what happens.
