Digital Portfolios

Based on the core competencies that inform our Medicine Wheel, every student will create a digital portfolio to author their own learning plan, to self-assess core competency development, and to showcase their learning over time. Self-assessment of the ‘Learn’ core competency will be through the ‘Four Blankets’, an Indigenous representation of the layers of support that build student resilience. With a sense of self at the center, the second blanket of family, the third blanket of community, and finally the fourth blanket of land, culture, and a broader perspective wrapping around them, students will reflect on the connections, supports and relationships that build their resiliency and sense of purpose in the world.

Sharing, self-assessing, and reflecting on their strengths, stretches, interests, the supports from which they benefit, and their ‘next steps’ helps students build their sense of self-efficacy: the belief that they are capable learners who can grow and succeed.

Through student curation of a variety of artefacts, such as text, images, audio recordings, and video, chosen from learning experiences both inside and outside of school, student learning and growth will be documented over time. In the Sea to Sky School District, a student’s digital portfolio is known as the MAP (My Action Plan).

The MAP is a living document that digitally captures a student’s learning journey, helping them to navigate their way through school, while at the same time serving as a guide to those that support them. Students continue to build upon their portfolios in preparation for a culminating Capstone in Grade 12, and are able to take their MAPS with them on the next stage of their journey once they leave school.

Evidence may include description, videos, artwork, images, writings, and audio. Students can include things from school, home, and their community. Anything that shows who and how they are as a learner is welcome.

In digital portfolios, students assemble and archive evidence of learning that best illustrate performance, achievement, and growth. This organization of evidence better illustrates the processes of learning and personal development over time through the combined use of multimedia (imaging, text, videos, audio) and self-reflection.

Self-assessment allows students to develop the ability to describe themselves as unique individuals in relation to the core competencies. Students will set goals and gain greater ownership of their learning when they have the opportunity to self-assess and reflect on who they are. Guiding questions will be provided as part of their MAP.
