Students will try all instruments and a final selection will be made with the assistance of an instructor.
Our goal for the individual student~
Match each student with an instrument on which they will be successful!
Our goal for the entire group~

Every student has an individual appointment!

Students are scheduled into band as part of their daily schedule.
Band meets for 41 minutes every day.
Students receive a grade for band and it is part of their grade point average.
Beginning Band will perform four concerts during the year and participate at the Oswego Band Festival and Solo Recital.
DON’T GET STUCK WITH JUNK!
Wait to get an instrument until AFTER your registration appointment!
Avoid “off brand” instruments-they may not play well for more than a couple of months.
Just because an item is shaped like an instrument does not mean it IS an instrument!
Many foreign made instruments are very inexpensive because they are made with:
Poor materials and soft metals
Inferior craftsmanship
Non-standard parts
They may also have problems
with tuning and tone quality.
Beginners will struggle with a poor quality instrument. Local music stores cannot do repairs because parts are not
readily available.

*Music is a form of intelligence that all children should have access to!
Will band interfere with student’s grades in other classes?
*No!
*It has been found that students participating in school instrumental music programs generally average higher grades in other subjects.
Do students have to take private lessons?
*Students are not required to take private lessons, however, your child will experience much greater success and enjoyment with private study.
*It is the policy of the Junior High School Band programs that all students are strongly encouraged to take lessons.
*We offer a list of suitable teachers that work well with young students.
Can a student be in band and other activities?
*Yes!
*We work very hard to allow our students to be involved in as much as possible.
*Flexibility and compromise are key to success.
*Nearly all of our band students are involved in sports, drama or art, in addition to band.
What if we already have an instrument?
*Please bring your instrument to your child’s appointment.
*We will inspect the instrument to make sure that it works correctly.
*Keep an open mind-your child may not be a match with the instrument that you already own.
Summer Band is housed at your child’s junior high school!
Welcome to Summer Beginner Band Camp! These guidelines will help you understand our program expectations and have a great experience as you start band!
1.Arrive a few minutes before the start of your class so we can all start right on-time every day!
2.If you need to miss a class, please bring a note from home so we have good attendance records.
3.Keep socializing to a minimum. We want this to be a great experience but we also have A LOT to learn in a short amount of time!
4.Be supportive of one another. Everyone is new and will be trying new things. Help and encourage each other.
5.Everything we do in class will be new to you and some of it may feel strange or be difficult at first. Stick with
it! You will get it but you MUST try every time! Show us your best effort and the results WILL follow!
6.Trust and be respectful of your teachers and do your best to follow instructions. We are giving you the best
information on how to PROPERLY play your instrument so you can improve and advance steadily.
7.Once you have learned a step in playing your instrument, keep doing it properly - even if it seems easy or
mundane. We will only move forward once you demonstrate mastery over EVERY step.
8.Be patient. This will not come instantly. If you follow our instructions and do the best work you can, you will
be amazed by your progress.
9.Use the equipment and supplies we recommend. We want you to use gear that will help you improve. Inferior equipment will HOLD YOU BACK!
