There are four areas which determine the band quarter grade: Homework, Classroom Collaboration, Concert Evaluation and Performances, Playing Quizzes and Tests.
1. Homework -Practice Reflection Log and various assignments
In addition to the regularly scheduled school rehearsals, it is necessary for each student to practice at home. It is strongly encouraged that a certain time each day be set aside for individual practice. Along with the practice reflection log will be some other assignments that will correspond to the skills/concepts being developed that week.
2. Playing Quizzes and Tests
Students will be given weekly playing quizzes and tests. When asked to perform for a grade, they will be graded on tone quality, posture, hand position, range, and technical facility. Playing tests are announced the week prior to the test, and class time is taken to prepare the students for each test.
3. Concert Evaluation and Performances
The attendance policy for all performances is required attendance. Any absences (except for school day excused absences) must be communicated to the director prior to the absence. Performing and demonstrating the work that was in progress for the whole quarter is such an important piece to the final process of preparing a work of music. In addition, students will do a Concert Evaluation following each performance.
4. Classroom Collaboration
It is necessary for each student to be prepared for class on a daily basis. Students must come to class with their instrument, music, and pencil. Students must also come to class with the right attitude of participation and cooperation. The success of the class depends on each student giving 100% effort each day. Being prepared and understanding how to function in a daily rehearsal is so important in the process of creating music.
Band Failure Policy If, at the end of one quarter a student receives an F, the student will be placed on band probation. Band probation means that the student is in danger of being removed from the band program. At that time, there will be contact and discussions between the student, parent and director concerning what is required for the student to receive a passing grade. The student will then have one quarter to achieve a passing grade in band. If a student receives a second failing grade during that school year, that student will be removed from the Bednarcik Band program.
