I completed my undergraduate studies in Cell and Structural Biology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I received a Masters of Science at the University of Chicago and have assisted in research projects at the National Brain Mapping Institute and NASA's JPL. Upon completion of these studies I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho, Southern Africa, as a physics, chemistry, biology and English teacher at Sefikeng High School. During that time, I realized I loved teaching and chose to change my career path. I attended DePaul University, receiving a master’s degree in Teaching and Learning prior to starting at Bednarcik Junior High in 2002. In 2016 I was a finalist for Illinois Teacher of the Year and an EarthEcho Teacher Fellow in the Water by Design program. In 2023 I participated in the Fulbright Teacher Fellowship Program and spent a few months working in Việt Nam. I was selected as the American Association of Chemistry Teachers 2023 Teacher of the Year. Currently, I am a 2024 CDC Science Ambassador Fellow. I enjoy seeing my students learn through experiments, and I am constantly amazed at the connections they are able to make between what they learn in science class and their real world experiences.
