In addition to the twenty hours of community service, NJHS students will complete class periods of peer coaching throughout the year. This program allows eighth grade NJHS members to provide assistance to a teacher in the building by working one-on-one with a student or leading a small group. It provides opportunities to increase mastery of academic skills, improve self-esteem, mend attitudes toward school, break down social barriers, and provide positive role models. The mutually beneficial program helps the tutee receive more individual assistance while the tutor gains a sense of responsibility and dedication. NJHS members are trained in peer coaching strategies, where they learn how to approach students respectfully and how to handle various academic or behavioral situations. The service program proves to be valuable to the students and teachers involved.
Students will need to keep accurate records in the peer coaching folders and have their supervising teacher sign their folder each week.
The folders are due in May.
Service hours should be completed in a variety of areas showing your well rounded participation in the community. For this reason, you may not include more than 5 hours in any one type of event.
Some types of acceptable service are as follows:
Any volunteer work for any community agency, such as the Red Cross, a homeless shelter, residents of Senior citizens communities, civil defense, fire department, Girl/Boy Scouts, or church activity if it deals with a community function (e.g., caroling at a nursing home)
Recycling drives
Volunteering at the local library
Volunteering at OQMS open house
Volunteering at Parent/Teacher conferences
Helping PTO at functions
Helping the school librarian after school hours
Assisting teachers and staff members at school after school hours
Volunteering with the Hope & Friendship Network
Volunteering with the Lemont Junior Women’s Club
Any activity approved in writing by the NJHS Chapter Advisors
Keep in mind that the purpose of service is to expand your experiences within the school and local community and to help those in need on a consistent, voluntary basis.
Some types of unacceptable service are as follows:
Any activity in which you are paid with money or favors, even if the job is in the acceptable category.
Any activity in which you directly help at a family member, relative, neighbor, or friend’s place of employment.
Any activity in which you directly help a family member, relative, neighbor, or friend, such as babysitting, snow removal, housekeeping, paperwork, or yard work.
Attending church is not a service activity unless the particular function involves a community charity.
Alter Serving or participation in the church choir should be included as an activity, NOT service.
Being a manager for a team at OQ does not count as service, but rather as an activity.
Each service activity must be signed by the supervisor. If the supervisor in charge is your parent or relative, the activity must be signed by a different official supervisor of that event.
Late service hours additions will not be accepted once the service hours log is submitted.
