Course Description:
Accelerated English is designed for students who want to have a deeper understanding of English Language-Arts. This course teaches students to read closely, delve deeply, and analyze thoroughly both fiction and non-fiction works, and use strong rhetorical and composition skills. Students will be required to read higher-level texts independently. Students are expected to write informative/explanatory, narrative, and argumentative pieces throughout the year. Speaking skills will be emphasized through whole class and small group discussions, and formal presentations. Creative projects will also be offered throughout the year. All essays, discussions, and projects will emphasize critical thinking skills and literary analysis. Students who join this class should have strong reading and writing skills as the class works at a faster pace and will require more independent, self-driven work.

This decision, once made, is a year-long commitment, so it is important that you make the best decision for yourself
Students will participate in the Wordmasters Analogy Challenge, a national test given 3 times a year.
Other data points that will be looked at: ELA/Reading grades and iReady Reading scores and writing samples
Embedded in the application is a Student Agreement that outlines the expectations for the accelerated course. Students applying for Accelerated English must complete the Student Agreement.
All students accepted into Accelerated English must complete a summer reading assignment before the first day of school.
Enrollment in Accelerated English has no impact on high school placement or course selection and does not enhance students’ GPA

Students will opt in to Accelerated English on the same Google Form counselors will share for Elective selections.
