Mission of WorkAbility I (WAI)
The mission of WAI is to promote the involvement of key stakeholders including students, families, educators, employers and other agencies in planning and implementing an array of services to assist students to transition to employment, lifelong learning and a quality life.
Eligibility for WAI Services
Students with an active Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) that attend a Sacramento City USD participating middle or high school are eligible to receive services. These services are not mandated by the I.E.P. and should not be confused with transition services which are a required component. Eligible students may receive some, many or all school based components but not all eligible students will placed in a paid work-based experience.
WorkAbility I
WorkAbility I is a nationally recognized school-to-work program that provides school-based-work, pre-employment training, work based learning, and connections to the world of careers for high school youth with disabilities who are making the transition from school-to-work, independent living, and post- secondary education or training.
Sacramento City Unified School District’s WorkAbility Program prides itself on
being able to implement comprehensive services throughout the school system and in the community. We provide all of the
services listed above during the school
year.

A: No, you would check with your front office at the school you attend to find the person that issues work permits on that campus.
Q: Are WorkAbility and/or services a promised service in a student’s IEP?
A: WorkAbility and TPP services are Grant funded services that support students that have IEP’s but never a promised service.
Q: Do all students that are in either WorkAbility and/or TPP get a work experience?
A: WorkAbility and/or TPP both have limited number of spaces for a paid placement work experience program. It is an application process to get into one of these work experiences. Students must be able to work independently. Both of these programs do not do supported employment where the student would have a job coach or work with a mentor.
A: Only students that have an active IEP’s are eligible to receive WorkAbility and/or TPP services.
