Deutsch 1

Deutsch 1 is a one year introductory course to the German language and is a CKM graduation and college admission requirement. This course focuses on basic grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and study of the German culture, in addition to the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Deutsch 1 utilizes a variety of resources: textbook, audio, video, German periodicals, newspaper, and the Internet and will primarily be taught in German.

The primary goal of Deutsch 1 is to help the students become proficient and cultural sensitive. By linking language and culture, Deutsch 1 seeks to broaden the students' communication skills while at the same time deepening their appreciation for other cultures than their own.

Many instructional approaches will be used in Deutsch 1 to help all types of learners: graphic organizers, paired activities, cooperative learning, questioning strategies (yes/no, either/or, multiple choice, short answer), Total Physical Response (TPR), surveys, reading authentic documents, games, singing/ listening to authentic music, visiting authentic websites and PowerPoint presentations to name a few.

The aim of this Deutsch 1 course is to communicate in the language and to develop the following competencies:

1. Understanding the gender of nouns and their cases in the sentence

2. Understanding subject pronouns

3. Regular/irregular/stem changing/modal auxiliary verb conjugation in the present tense

4. Sentence structure

5. Pronunciation and intonation

6. Simple German dictation

7. Translation from German into English and vice versa

8. Short written narrative that presents a clear point on an assigned topic, using correct sentences, noun/verb agreement, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling

9. Cultural understanding of German holidays, the German school system, family life, music and mass media in German speaking countries, and the youth culture of Germany

10. Reading of a German Level 1 Chapter book
