Free Virtual Professional Learning Opportunities in Literacy


CDE is offering a free virtual webinar series designed to recenter the ELA/ELD Framework, the blueprint for the implementation of the California State Standards for ELA and Literacy and the California ELD Standards. The ELA/ELD Framework advocates for a comprehensive and integrated model of literacy that offers evidence-based literacy instruction, including explicit instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, and other decoding skills, as well as the development of vocabulary, comprehension, writing, speaking, and listening skills. This series is designed for all school, district, county, state, and higher education educators who want to learn more about California’s recommended literacy policies and practices, as well as why the ELA/ELD Framework is as relevant today as it was in 2014, how it is organized what it offers, how it can be used, and how it supports Superintendent Thurmond's Literacy Campaign of "Reading by Third Grade and Beyond" on the following dates:

● September 26, 2023: Overview of the Framework and Defining Comprehensive Literacy

● October 10, 2023: Teaching Foundational Skills – Print Concepts, Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Word Recognition, and Text Reading Fluency

● November 14, 2023: Teaching Integrated and Designated ELD and Promoting Multilingual Programs

● December 12, 2023: Teaching Language Development – Vocabulary Development and Grammatical Understandings

● January 9, 2024: Teaching Meaning Making – Literal and Inferential Comprehension and Critical Reading, Writing, and Listening

● February 13, 2024: Teaching Effective Expression – Writing, Discussing, Presenting, and Using Language Conventions

● March 12, 2024: Teaching Content Knowledge – Wide Reading, Engaging with Informational Text, and Engaging in Research

● April 9, 2024: Assessing Student Progress and Providing Needed Interventions

● May 14, 2024: Systems for Implementation and the California Literacy Roadmap

Note: The Collaborative also provides Resources for Literacy Development that allow an individual to select a topic of interest in literacy and then explore a variety of available resources.

A free webinar series is being offered by Sacramento COE on Structured Literacy instruction and what educators need to know about the content and principles of a structured literacy approach grounded in the Science of Reading. The webinar series is offered across multiple dates.
