 ✨Math 7 and Math 2+ with Ms. Trost✨

yaara-trost@scusd.edu

Hello 7th and 8th graders, and a special welcome to our new Miwok Middle School students! To our returning students, welcome back!

My name is Ya'ara Trost, or Ms. Trost, and I am so excited to learn math with you! I can't wait to meet you all and have an incredible year together!

I am grateful to be starting another year at Miwok Middle School and for the opportunity to continue growing and learning with our wonderful Miwok Middle Community. Though I am originally from the Bay Area, I now call Sacramento home. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics with a minor in Education, as well as my Master's in Education from UC Davis. Go Aggies!

My passion is math education! I firmly believe that everyone is a "math person." Whether you already love math, are still warming up to it, or find it challenging, my goal is to inspire you and engage you in the world of mathematics. In our class, you will learn to perservere, solve problems, think critically, and most of all, explore the beauty of mathematics!

A little sneak peak of our classroom 🥰

Math in the "Real World"

Math in Sports

"Points per game. Free throw percentages. These are the kinds of stats that many basketball enthusiasts know, and can often reel off. But basketball stats involve tallying more than the number of times the ball goes through the net—it’s about the plays that help your team score, and all the other skills needed to make those plays." Math in Architecture

"The most remarkable ancient architecture of all may be the pyramids of Egypt, constructed between 2700 B.C. and 1700 B.C. Most of them were built and scaled at about a 51-degree angle. The Egyptians clearly and mysteriously possessed knowledge of geometry, as evidenced by the accuracy of pyramid construction." (Discovery Education)

Math in Art and Design

"From the earliest times, artists have made use of symmetry and pattern in creating and decorating works of art and architecture. Symmetry involves specific ways of repeating a shape. There are several types of symmetry: reflection, rotation, and translation. In reflection symmetry, a shape is “flipped” across an imaginary line to produce its mirror image. In rotation symmetry, a shape is turned at a constant angle and repeated. In translation symmetry, a shape is repeated by sliding it (forward, backward, sideways), without flipping or turning. In all of these transformations, the shape’s line lengths and angles stay the same." (Math in Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art)

Math in Video Games

"The virtual world you encounter in a computer game is basically made up of a space occupied by polygons with decorations on. 3D artists can spend days creating an object with tens of thousands of polygons. These polygons can be decorated in a number of ways to make them look better, but in this section we focus on the geometry and the process of rendering it (drawing the polygons). Computer graphics have improved vastly over the past 40 years, and the main reason for this is the improvement in processors which allows more polygons to be rendered." (University of Cambridge)
