Teaching:

Neur  1 - Intro to Neuroscience

Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary field that examines how the brain and nervous system function to produce behavior, thought, emotion, and perception. This course explores neuroscience across multiple levels of analysis, from molecules and cells to brain circuits, cognition, and behavior. Students will examine how neuroscientists investigate questions such as learning, memory, sensation, and decision-making using diverse experimental approaches. The course also introduces major neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, autism, addiction, and other conditions that affect millions worldwide. Through these topics, students will gain an understanding of how neuroscience helps explain both healthy brain function and disease.

Neur 175 - Neuroscience of Healthy Aging

This course explores how aging affects the brain from molecules and cells to neural circuits and behavior. Drawing on neuroscience, genetics, and epidemiology, students examine how genetic and environmental factors interact to influence brain health across the lifespan. Topics include selective neuronal vulnerability, longevity genes, neuroplasticity and cognitive resilience, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial function, lifestyle influences (diet, exercise, sleep, and stress), social well-being, and strategies to reduce the risk of age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Through lectures, discussion, and analysis of current research, students investigate the biological mechanisms that promote healthy brain aging and cognitive longevity.
