Bio: Dr. Evans’s interest in neuroscience began at Bowdoin College (with Dr. Richmond Thompson) and continued at UC San Diego (Dr. James Goodson), studying anxiety circuits in wild-caught South African finches. He earned his Ph.D. with Dr. Christopher A. Lowry at the University of Bristol, investigating stress-related regulation of serotonergic systems. During postdoctoral training with Dr. Robert M. Sapolsky at Stanford, he combined neuroimmunology, neuroanatomy, and neurochemistry to study how Toxoplasma gondii alters host risk-taking behavior. He joined Dr. Mehrdad Shamloo’s laboratory at Stanford, leading studies of noradrenergic regulation of neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease. His work showed that β-adrenergic blockade promotes neuroinflammation in AD mouse models and impairs learning and memory in aging. Dr. Evans’s research contributed to the founding of CuraSen Therapeutics and the NIH-funded Stanford Program for Integrated Neuroscience Technologies (SPrINT). His laboratory at Santa Clara University investigates locus coeruleus neuronal heterogeneity and stress vulnerability. He values rigorous creative science, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentoring future leaders in science.
