What Dance classes do I need to take in this 4 year long program?

A brief overview is listed below.

Dance Appreciation

Students will learn the fundamentals of dance through Dance History, Anatomy, and Physical Dance Movements; using elements of various styles of dance. Students can expect to learn dance work such as barre, center work, traveling steps, French Ballet Vocabulary. Students will learn choreography to perform in front of an audience. Students will also learn injury prevention practices such as yoga, Pilates, and proper stretching practices.

Prerequisite: None

Grades:9/10/11/12

Dance Foundations

Students will build on to their Dance Appreciation knowledge from the previous year placing them at an intermediate level of dance. They will dive deeper into the fundamental studies of Ballet, Contemporary, and Modern techniques including; barre work, center work, across the floor, and more challenging choreography. Students will be expected to build on their Dance History knowledge. Students are expected to perform each semester for this class. Students will continue with their injury prevention practices of yoga, Pilates, and proper stretching techniques.

Prerequisite: Dance Appreciation

Advanced Dance 1- CTE

During the Advanced Dance 1 progressive class students must be able to demonstrate foundational movement in Ballet, Modern, and Contemporary Dance techniques, emphasizing the students ability to execute movement vocabulary properly. Students will begin to research dance techniques and styles. Students will be adding to their fundamental dance techniques and movement vocabulary. This is a Dance CTE course. Students are required to attend auditions and perform.

Prerequisite: Dance Foundations or Audition

Advanced Dance 2- CTE

During Year two of Industry course work students will begin to build their portfolios. Students will be required to choreograph a solo and ensemble dance using the dance techniques learned from previous years of the dance courses. Students will study Choreographers from the Post-Modern dance era to the present dance industry. Students will continue their work in fundamental and foundational dance techniques in Ballet, Modern, and Contemporary dance as well as injury prevention work. This is a Dance CTE course.

What do I need to do for my audition into the GLVPAA's Dance Education program?

Students are to fill out a GLVPAA application which includes two references. These do not have to be dance related teachers or mentors. Students DO NOT have to have any dance experience prior to auditioning.

For Audition Day:

  • Students should come prepared to dance! Hair pulled off of the face in either a braid or a bun. If you have bangs please wear a headband pulling them off of your face.

  • Dance Attire- Leggings, tank top, or a fitted shirt. Expect to sweat!

  • The class will be taken barefoot or with ballet slippers/jazz flats.

  • Class will be taught with Ballet, Contemporary/Modern, and Industry Commercial Dance techniques.

  • Students can expect a Center Floor warm-up, Across the floor passes, and then a Final Combination that will be taught in class.

  • Students will be given 30sec-50sec time at the end of the class to present any solo work they have in their dance genre of choice (this is not required)

The Audition will take an Hour and a Half

What careers can I go into as a Dance major?

Dance majors bring a wealth of workplace skills besides pointe work and jazz hands. The very nature of their training translates to strong communication and non-verbal skills, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. How can I join the After-School Dance Team?

Email Ms. E @ ehany@scs-k12.net with the subject title After School Dance Program OR stop in to her classroom room 272 during school hours.

Do I need to take dance classes outside SHS dance program?

This is not a requirement, however it is recommended to have continued studio time outside of the school day courses. This will help a dancer to develop stronger technique.

SHS offers an after school program for further development and progress in the dance field.

How can I become an Intern helping the Jr. Arts Academy's elementary after-school program?

The Jr. Arts Academy is an after school arts program for students in the 3rd - 6th grade. Students are there Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 2:40pm-6:00pm. An ideal candidates for the internship should be able to commit 2-6 hours a week in a consistent program schedule and the ability to work with younger learners. Selected interns will also receive certified volunteer hours from Oberlin Center for the Arts and letters of support.

Fine Arts Internships are available to SHS Junior or Senior Arts student for the 2020-21 school year. If you are interested contact Rosalyn Shepherd at rshepherd@scs-k12.net, or Ms. E at ehany@scs-k12.net

General responsibilities are to assist the Site Manager and program staff before, during and after programming, which includes:

  • Arranging program spaces, site preparation, set-up, tear-down and cleanup duties

  • Being in the classrooms to guide students through artistic experiences at the direction of the instructors

  • Support students outside of the class time, and working at the direction of the Site Manager

  • Monitor student behavior and communicate issues in a timely manner

  • Help to coordinate and implement special events including family nights and program showcase
