As a part of the English curriculum in Smyth County Schools, all students are required to complete the writing project based assessment, which has taken the place of the End of Course Writing SOL test. This is both a state standard as well as being a graduation requirement for all students.
Students must:
complete three essays, one each of persuasive, argumentative, and analytical.
attain an overall score of at least 24 (8 on each essay). Essays are scored using a 12-point rubric.
The persuasive essay will be completed in 9th grade, and the argumentative and analytical essays will be completed in 10th grade.Â
