Tony Sim (Singapore) cruises to MISO16 Late Bird title
In her first major competitive event in over two years, the 13-time Malta Champion Theresa Brousson rediscovered her best form to finish 1st in the Open Division of the 16th Malta International Scrabble Open Main Event, ahead of runner-up Tony Sim (Singapore), David Webb (England) in 3rd and Rik Kennedy (N. Ireland) in 4th. Ferenc Gerlits (Hungary) was the highest placed amongst those in the bottom half of the field to win the first Ratings Prize, with Moira Fenech (Malta) and Steve Perry (England) getting the 2nd and 3rd Ratings Prizes respectively.
In the B Division, the Maltese player living in and playing for Switzerland, Alan Abela, was the winner, ahead of Lexia Smallwood (Australia), Josephine Mayo (Malta) and Mario Camilleri (Malta), with Mary Doyle (Ireland) and Anna Borg (Malta) winning the ratings prizes for this division.
In the side events, Andrew Golding (Canada) won the 1-day Early Bird, ahead of Terry Kang (USA) and Bob Violett (England), whilst Alan Abela, Josephine Mayo and Kevin Pirotta (Malta) claimed the three ratings prizes. Tony Sim cruised to victory in the concluding 2-day Late Bird, ahead of Rik Kennedy and his co-national Wolfram Poh. Maureen Mcdonald (Malta), Breda O'Brien (Ireland) and Martin Chan (England) won the ratings prizes.
MISO16 was held over six days between the 1st and 7th of November at the Golden Tulip Vivaldi Hotel and was sponsored by SportMalta.
