Facilities

Troop Room and Kitchen

The Troop Den is the old Oteramika School Classroom. The school opened in 1875 and continued to run until it was closed in 1969. The kitchen is believed to have been built after the school was gazetted to The Scout Association of New Zealand's care.

Graeme Swale Training Room

Named after a Scout Leader who spent a lot of time dedicated to Scouting in Southland and who compiled "The History of Scouting in Southland 1908 - 1988", this room has space for meetings, trainings and Team Building retreats.

Seating, Whiteboard and Data projector are available with this room.

Toilets and Showers

Both the male and female blocks have 2 showers in them with the male block also containing 2 toilets for their use. The female toilets are attached to the side of the kitchen with one of these being available for disabled use.

Future plans involve repainting the toilet and shower block and installing gas hot water.

Cooks House

This small hut contains 2 single beds and is a nice private room with an outside toilet on the side of the building.

McLeod House

McLeod House was originally the School Masters house for the Oteramika School and was built in 1914. This was converted to contain 3 bunkrooms (13 beds) with new mattresses and a hall where meetings and trainings can occur.

There are future plans to reinstall a small bathroom and install a small kitchen into the building as well as general maintenance and repairs

Rovers Retreat

The Rovers Retreat is named after the Rover Section in Scouts.

A bright and airy 27 bed facility that has ample power outlets throughout the building and new mattresses.

Bunkroom

Contains 12 Bunks and has recently been refurbished inside with the bunks being rebuilt and new mattresses installed.

Chapel

Mokotua has an outside chapel that has been used in the past for church services, weddings and as a respite from the busy campsite.

Campfire Circle

Campfire is a tradition dating back to the beginning of Scouting when Lord Baden Powell held his first Scout Camp for Boys on Brownsea Island where at the end of the Campfire Lord Baden Powell took some of the ashes from the campfire and spread them at the next campfire he attended and then repeating the gesture.

It is believed that campfire ashes from this first Campfire at Brownsea Island are in the Mokotua Scout Camp Campfire Circle too!

As this area is ceremonial, it is expected that hirers and visitors adhere to the rules of this area and not cook on this Campfire.
