Week 4: April 13 - April 17

Mon, April 13:  Sketchbook Check: Tailor or Gloucester.  Briefly go over Study Guide.  Students get approval to get final paper for project and begin sketching out their design lightly in graphite.  HW:  Study guide due on test day: Thursday, April 23.

Week 1: March 23-27

Tues, March 24:  Finish going over text design and how to begin Tortoise.  Students work on practice project: Tortoise, by making at least 2 thumbnails of potential compositions before seeking approval.  Thumbnails must be colored.    HW:  Alice In Wonderland Due Monday March 30.  Tonight: Step 2 and Text Guidelines (measured and drawn with a ruler).   Review Crossword Puzzle due this Friday!

Wed, March 25:   Early Release.   Draw examples of how to do banners and accents.  Students get approval for best thumbnail before being given watercolor paper to start their sketches. (remember: thumbnails must be colored).  They will then lightly and carefully lay out their text and image using a ruler and the reference, enlarging their approved thumbnail.      HW: Alice In Wonderland Due Monday March 30.  Tonight: Step 3 and Text Written (measured and drawn with a ruler for correct kerning).   Review Crossword Puzzle due this Friday!

Thur, March 26:     Students finish preliminary drawings today.  When done, they can work on Alice Homework.  HW:  Alice In Wonderland Due Monday March 30.  Tonight: Step 4 and Stylizing text.   Review Crossword Puzzle due this Friday!

Tues, February 24:  Grade and enter “Vertumnus” Homework.  Start embossing/debossing techniques.  Go over scoring and folding techniques: show students how to score and fold the mandibles (pleating).  Go over doming the body of the bug.  Go over fringe/texturing techniques: have students fringe antennas  Go over curling: have students curl the plain wings  HW:  Insect due Monday 3.2 stippled in Pen.  Tonight drawing step 1 in graphite.  Study for Quiz on 3/5

Wed, February 25:   Early Release.   Go over stacking: have students start stacking pieces and gluing them together (talk about shims, but do not have them shim.)  Lastly have students decorate the bug in some way either with cut outs, quilling, embossing, spiral, weaving, flaps, or torn pieces.  HW: Insect due Monday 3.2 stippled in Pen.  Tonight drawing step 2  in graphite.  Study for Quiz on 3/5

Thur, February 26:     Students finish decorating their bugs and submit for grading.  Students choose bugs for final project.  HW:  Insect due Monday 3.2 stippled in Pen.  Tonight drawing step 3 in graphite.  Study for Quiz on 3/5

Fri, February 27:   Students begin drawing their insect in sketchbook about 4” x 6” to fit the 5” x 7” board.  Students draw large insect initial drawing in their sketchbook.  Students check drawing with you.  Students should number the different parts/pieces.  Students should make a thumbnail of their insect in their sketchbook, making notes about what techniques they will use where, which pieces will be the most elevated, what papers they will use where (cut and glue little swatches in sketchbook.) etc.  They should also color their thumbnail.  HW:  Insect due Monday 3.2 stippled in Pen.  Tonight drawing step 4 in graphite.  Study for Quiz on 3/5

Week 6: February 16-20

Mon, February 16: No School.  R & R. President's Day.

Fri, February 20:   Pass out Canson Bugs, Envelopes, Detail scissors, and bone folders.  Students should put their name, period, and teacher on their envelope.  Students cut out canson bug pieces.  Go over scissor/cutting technique: have them cut out the entire bug (possibly including the holes in the wings, or emboss the holes in the wings).   HW:  Archimboldo “Vertumnus” due Tuesday 2.24:  Use a Secondary color scheme with black or darker analogous for shadows.  You may shade for this one.  (tonight start drawing step 4 in colored pencils).

Week 4: February 2-6

Mon, February 2: Quickly go over Frida and Study Guide.  Art History Lesson.  Review Value.  Continue final self-portrait outline in sketchbook, including planar analysis.  HW:  Test 1 Study Guide (Including crossword puzzle) due test day:  Thursday, February 12.  Frida due Friday, February 13 using mark-making in at least 4 analogous colors (can include black).  Tonight: Drawing Step 1 in graphite.
