DESCRIPTION: This course will focus upon the fundamental concepts of chemistry associated with the structure, forms, changes, availability, and uses of matter and energy. Various methods will be used in teaching such as lecture and note taking, discussion of scientific literature, audio-visual aids, performance-based assessment, and lab exercises.
TEXTBOOK: Modern Chemistry (Holt McDougal 2015). *Students may opt to use the ONLINE textbook only instead of getting one from the school.
MATERIALS NEEDED: One large 3-ring binder notebook, scientific calculator, and set of color pencils or pens.
LAB FEE: $30 per person this includes the purchase of a laboratory notebook.
GRADING: Overall = 75% Assessments + 25% Assignments
Assessments include: Unit Exams, Non-inquiry Labs, E-day work, and Lab Reports
Assignments include: Inquiry Labs, Online Quizzes, Classwork, and Homework
**Final counts 20% (separate average depending on attendance)
BONUS POINTS: The ONLY way to earn bonus points is completing activities from the “Extra Projects” folder in schoology. You are limited to submitting 2 projects per 9-weeks.
**Parents/Guardians will receive a phone call (or email) any time a student’s overall grade drops below a 75 average. Hopefully, this will allow ample time for the student to receive extra tutoring or help before receiving a failing mark.
OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this course is to expound on the student’s basic understanding of science in general and chemistry in particular. This knowledge should include, but is not limited to, the following concepts that are tests on the ACT:
· To become familiar with and implement the scientific method.
· To learn and employ lab skills.
· To interpret graphs and diagrams describing a scientific process.
· To understand interaction and uses of matter and energy.
Throughout the year the students will experience cooperative learning techniques. The use of technology will be readily present in the classroom through tools such as Schoology, GoogleDocs, and Remind.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior at all times in class or in the field. Disrespect towards the instructor or any class member will not be tolerated. Parental conferences and/or administrative intervention may be called at any time to help maintain a productive learning environment.

Cheating: will be handled in accordance to school handbook.
Dress code: will receive a disciplinary notice and be sent to the office.
Make-Up Work:
Only after an EXCUSED absence, it is the student’s responsibility to get his or her assignments from the teachers and turn them in within 5 days. Students should make arrangements to make up tests, quizzes, and other assignments. Chemistry is a course that continuously builds upon your knowledge and frequent absences often result in lower grades! Again, the BURDEN is on the student and/or parent to COMMUNICATE!!!
