Achievement Standard - Foundation
By the end of Foundation students are expected to be able to:
connect number names and numerals up to 20,
estimate the size of all numbers to 20
use counting strategies to solve problems that involve comparing, combining and separating numbers to 20
match individual objects with counting sequences up to and back from 20.
order the first 10 numbers.
Counting and Place Value
By the end of Foundation students are expected to be able to:
Use a variety of concrete and pictorial representations of numbers to 0 – 20, with 1:1 correspondence
Form patterns and sets of numbers
Count to 20 orally forwards and backwards
Orally count to 115
Estimate quantities/collections, and then count to check
Know Ordinal numbers (including ‘last’) 1st – 10th
Begin to understand the concept of skip counting by 2’s to 10
Begin to understand the concept o skip counting by 10’s to 100
Addition and Subtraction
By the end of Foundation students are expected to be able to:
Build quantities up to 10 to represent addition stories
Join collections and determine the total
Record addition expressions e.g: 3 and four
Use count-on 1 or 2 strategy
Build quantities and join quantities up to 10
Recognise the ‘+’ symbol to represent addition stories
Use take-away language to understand the ‘–’ symbol (if ready T 4)
Record subtraction expressions e.g. take-away and minus
Write addition/subtraction number sentences
Explore the relationship between addition and subtraction
Use count-back 1 or 2 strategy
Show combinations of numbers and objects to 10
Count forwards and backwards to mentally add and subtract small numbers in story problems (counting from larger number)
Begin to use the doubles strategy
Begin to use the near doubles strategy
