EOLAS DO THUISTÍ - iNFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Dialann scoile

Every pupil needs a dialann scoile or similar dedicated copy to note obair bhaile in and allow parent-teacher notes. Please check the dialann scoile every night to aid your child and sign it when the obair bhaile is completed. The first number of items are repeated through the week and only need their details written on the first night. Here is a good example of a dialann being used well.

If a child can't get their obair bhaile finished, for whatever reason, please try to get the top items on the list covered and write a quick note in the dialann scoile. This lets me know the decision was taken by the parent and usually reassures the child that we are communicating with each other.

Copy work

Here is an example of very neat written work in a cóipleabhar. We're looking for a good standard of such work so that the páistí are able to continue on like this through their education years.

At the top is the date, book title (The Green Genie abbreviated to TGG) and the relevant page number. Each answer has a question number at the start and there are blank lines left between these answers. This space allows editing and teacher notes. Several lines are left between activities/sections. My main focus at the start of the year is capitalisation and neatness, not spelling; although common words, such as 'because', should be targeted for getting right.

Litriú - Spelling

To assist in learning to spell words it is a well known fact that writing out the word is very useful. Each night the class will be writing out every word being learned three times in the practice copybook. As I have demonstrated in class I recommend this simple system:

  1. look at the word as written at the start of the week

  2. say the word aloud

  3. write it out while saying aloud the letters being written

  4. repeat the word aloud

eg: bóthar... b, ó, t, h, a, r... bóthar

Parents should check that all the words are spelled out correctly every night and that no errors creep in over the course of the week. Neatness in the layout of the pages being used will also help avoid this. Please initial these practice pages when checked.

I often link words from the litriú list to the teanglann.ie where the words can be heards being spoken by native speakers from each of the main Gaeltacht regions. Forvo.com is another good site to use to see how words are pronounced correctly in different languages. Below are some informative sites to help learn spellings.

Léitheoireacht - Reading

Reading is often part of obair bhaile and should be done aloud. Ideally the child is not right beside the listener and so must project their voice; busy kitchens can be ideal! Encourage them to read aloud excerpts from books they are reading for pleasure. By Rang 2 children should have started to use intonation and character voices to enliven a reading for their audience.

As Láthair - Absent

The rolla must be taken by 10 every morning. If a child has not arrived at school by then they are marked absent. Each such absence needs to be covered by a Nóta Díláithreacha - Student Absence Note; these are available from the school and to print off the school website. The name of any pupil who is as láthair for 20+ days in any given school year must be passed on to the department so they can record and investigate. At that stage all the nótaí we have received are posted off as well so it is vital that parents always send one in when their child returns to school.
