You are able to rent (or buy) from any company you wish. However, Goulet & Co. offers high-quality, reputable brands that will be consistent and last. They offer a rent-to-own program where payments are made monthly, making it more manageable to purchase an instrument. Payments are no longer required once the total balance is paid or if the instrument is returned to Goulet at any point. Goulet & Co. does free minor repairs included with rental cost, provides a free loaner instrument during repairs if needed, and makes weekly visits directly to your child's school to do repairs or drop off orders. We have worked with Goulet and Co. for many years and rely on their dependability, quality, and convenience.

If you already have an instrument (i.e. an older sibling's, relative's, neighbor's), or are purchasing a used instrument, please have it serviced by a repair technician prior to your child's first lesson. Depending on the instrument and the length of time it has not been used, the instrument could need a fair amount of repairs. Goulet & Co. have reputable instrument repair technicians who would be happy to schedule an appointment. See above for their contact information.
In general, we do not recommend purchasing an instrument until your musician has played for at least a full school year. While at first it may seem more convenient and economical to purchase a cheaper instrument online, experience has shown that this is rarely the case! Unfortunately, not all instruments are created equal! Most cheap instruments for sale online are poor quality, and tend to fall into disrepair very quickly. Even worse, they are typically unrepairable due to being made with off-brand, non-standardized parts. In our experience, most families who purchase a cheap instrument online wind up spending more money (and aggravation) over time than if they had rented-to-own initially.
If you still would like to purchase an instrument, please have your instrument approved by one of the Elementary Band teachers prior to purchasing to ensure that you are obtaining a quality instrument. You can view a list of reputable instrument brands below. If purchasing a used instrument, please have it serviced by a repair technician prior to your child's first lesson.
The district has a very limited supply of instruments available to loan. This option is reserved for families exhibiting considerable financial need. We cannot guarantee that we will have an instrument available to loan. If your family needs to loan instrument, please contact Mr. Loretz directly (aloretz@scit.org).
