“The past and present wilt- I have to fill them, emptied them, And proceed to fill my next fold of the future.”
You cant truly run from the past. In my experience, there are some things that you truly can't escape. The quote from Whitman talks about emptying of moving on from the past so that you can make and create your future. In fact, I like this so much because running from your past isn't even a good thing. Facing your problems is a sign of growth, a sign of reflecting and knowing that you are moving forward. I think that we can all learn something from that book. Song of Myself isn't just a book but a testament to yourself. I really appreciate the reflection piece that happens toward the end of the book. I think that in life reflection is a big part and if you want to move forward and advance you are going to have to learn to do so. Otherwise, you will just be stuck with everyone else.
Now from where I come from, sometimes this isn't always a bad thing. In fact, we need people to do jobs like like this. For example a plumber. If it isn't for them, who would help someone when they need their bathroom repaired? Or better yet a policeman or firefighter. Who would be there for people when they need help? Or when a building is on fire. Although people like this are needed, not everyone is this type of person. People who work a traditional 9-5 isn't bad in fact it is a good income and a steady job so that works. But when you work at the same thing for 40 years or longer you're not progressing. You are staying at the same place. I think that this has been one of my biggest fears. Me doing the same thing and not progressing, not becoming a better version of myself. A song of myself isn't just a story but a progression. I think that we should all inspire to be progressive people instead of non-progressive people.
