The best ways to support your student are:
Create a supportive school work environment. Your student will be online interacting in classes with their teachers and peers for longer stretches than was expected in the Spring - having a designated work space where they can focus will go a long way in supporting their success!
Develop a routine. Your student’s day will begin with advisory each morning at 8:30AM and they will have classes until 3:00PM. Helping them to get up, eat breakfast, and set an intention for their day will help them start each day off on the right foot. Your student will follow their schedule (with times included) very similarly to how they would follow a schedule while at school; time management will be important to ensure that your student gets to class on time and is ready to engage from the start of class.
Encourage screen breaks. Your student will have a 5 minute break between each class. Encourage them to take a break from their screen, stretch, get some fresh air, get a snack, etc. so that they can be refreshed and ready to focus in their next class.
Help your student get organized. Your student will need to develop a system to keep track of homework, assignments, due dates, etc. Being organized will go a long way in reducing stress and will help your student stay on top of their work!
Get familiar with your student’s technology. Your student will use Outlook, Google Classroom, Overgrad, and Infinite Campus on a regular basis to support their learning. Ask them to show you their laptop so that you can learn the systems together! If anything is wrong with your student’s laptop, please let your student’s advisor know as soon as possible so that we can get you working technology immediately.
Stay in communication with your student’s advisor. Your student’s advisor will be scheduling a 1 on 1 with your child every 2 weeks for academic and social/emotional support. Ask your child how those check ins are going and follow up with your student’s advisor with calls/texts/emails, etc as needed.
