County Winners and State Finalists!
First in Berks County for the "Garden Guardian"
A huge congratulations to the 8th-grade Gifted student teams, who competed in the county-wide BCIU STEM Design Challenge on March 14th. The challenge this year required the students to design and build a prototype of an agricultural robot, or a piece of high-tech farming equipment that could improve farming practices here in PA.... out of K'Nex only! The students also submitted an engineering notebook and professional blueprint. The teams had to arrive at the BCIU with their creation unassembled. They were then given only 2 hours to reassemble, interview with the judges, and present the entire package! All the students did an amazing job.
We would like to give a HUGE shout-out to the team, "The Garden Girls" for the 'Garden Guardian' because they WON first place out of all the submissions for Berks County! These students will now be moving on to the state-wide competition and represent Berks County in Harrisburg on May 3rd. Congratulations to our Gifted student team, ‘The Garden Girls’ for their innovation and impressive design thinking!”

Transportation and Infrastructure Award
Future City is a hands-on cross-curricular educational program that brings STEM to life for students in grades 6 through 8th grades. Using the Engineering Design Process and project management skills, students showcase their solutions to a city-wide sustainability issue. https://futurecity.org/
Congratulations to the 8th-grade gifted students for their recent award after competing in the Future City competition! The students researched cutting-edge technology and worked with multiple engineering strategies to create a futuristic city named, D.O.M.E., which stands for ‘District of Manipulating Electricity’. It even features an underground monorail and homemade electricity transducer! The students worked hard to produce an exemplary essay, financial plan, and model of their futuristic city, including overcoming the challenge of not being able to attend due to weather conditions last week. The Future City judges have invited our team to present during an upcoming presentation via Zoom, and are interested in hearing more about the team’s ideas for harnessing electricity from naturally occurring weather patterns, including shielding their citizens from the effects of radiation! This team showed resiliency in overcoming challenges, and the Future City award has been sponsored by generous FC donors. We are very proud of the team! Congratulations to these 8 outstanding 8th-grade gifted students! Way to go, Panthers!

I am very proud of our sixth-grade team of gifted students as they have completed their Unless Contest submissions! Our students ‘think outside the box’ agency-based projects included coded gaming on Scratch, a card game, a sticker campaign, a picture book, and a graphic novel. Their level of research, depth of knowledge, and creativity were notable and stood out amongst the other submissions. I am proud to share that we had two students selected as finalists for this competition out of 800 student entries: Aria and Vienna’s books and outreach plans were among the featured projects during the celebration! I am very proud of all the student’s hard work and happy to share that everyone will get a chance to be honored at this main event.

Student Campaign for endangered species awareness
#changeagency!
The basis for the team's initiative this year was to bring awareness to birds, like the Indian White Eye that are being taken out of their native habitats and kept in captivity and/or bred in captivity as part of the exotic bird trade. The students' aim was to compare this concern with the loss of habitat for the birds like the Indian White Eye, who live in India within the rainforest. This can also be compared to the native birds like hawks, eagles, or other smaller species of songbirds that live in our communities who might be losing their habitats to deforestation and city sprawl. These concerns became the foundation for the team, 'The White-Eyed Wonders'!
