The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is designed to help students who are experiencing academic difficulty due to mental health issues or substance abuse. The goal is to remove non-academic barriers that prevent achievement. The SAP Team is comprised of administrators, teachers, school counselors, school nurses, and a SAP Educational Alliance Specialist from Caron Treatment Centers, all who have been trained by the state and understand and respect the importance of confidentiality. At the elementary level, the Student Assistance Program offers opportunities for small psychoeducational skills groups and parent consultations with the Educational Alliance Specialist. SAP is available throughout the district and services vary depending on age.
The purpose of small groups is to provide a setting for students to learn personal skills in order to manage experiences such as anxiety, anger, self-control, self-esteem, and more! Our Student Assistance Program Educational Alliance Specialist and school counselors offer small groups throughout the school year, which are typically organized by grade level, are 30 minutes during the school day, and meet approximately 8 sessions. Students can be signed up year after year, so if your child did not participate in a group one year, they are able to sign up the following.
(Note: Signing a student up for a SAP group does not refer them to the SAP Team or the official SAP process.)

Confidential referrals are made to the SAP Team. Referrals may come from teachers, administrators, counselors, other school personnel, a students, or a parent.
Team members discuss the nature of the referral and how to proceed.
Teachers and other school pesonnel complete observation forms to provide a complete picture fo the student regarding observable behaviors.
Team members discuss the results of the observation forms and determine if the SAP process should be continued.
When warranted, the SAP process proceeds with a phone call to the parent from one of the team members. During this phone call, team members will share data form the observation forms. Team members will also discuss how parents can continue the SAP process. Written permission to continue will be requested.
Upon receiving written parent permission, the Educational Alliance Specialist will contact and schedule a parent meeting via phone or in-person.
During this meeting, recommendations will be given to the parent.
The SAP Team will monitor the student. This means that the observation forms will be collected at a specific point to see if changes (positive or negative) occur.
In some cases, the data suggests that a student will not need the SAP process. In those instances, the case will be closed. Cases can be reopened if another referral is made.
