Language Arts
While our learning support classroom is geared towards supporting students' individual ELA needs, our curriculum closely aligns with the seventh-grade regular education curriculum. My objective is to customize our curriculum standards to address each student's specific areas of focus within English Language Arts.
In order to target students' decoding, fluency, and comprehension needs, I implement a direct systematic multisensory approach to language arts. Additionally, I incorporate repeated practice throughout the ELA LS curriculum to help students reinforce their skills and apply their knowledge to various aspects of reading.
Daily reading plays a significant role in our classroom instruction. Throughout the year, we will explore several novels and short stories to allow students to engage with different genres and literary elements. Some of the novels scheduled for this year include "I am Malala," "Chasing Lincoln's Killer," and "Hatchet."
Furthermore, all students are encouraged to participate in the 25 Book Challenge. More information about the program can be found in the provided linktree. Students may utilize their required Accelerated Reading books each quarter to contribute towards this initiative.
Math
Our learning support mathematics curriculum is carefully crafted to offer a thorough and stimulating learning experience for students, helping them establish a solid understanding of mathematical principles and abilities.
First the curriculum focuses on guiding students towards mastering mathematical concepts using a range of teaching methods. Recognizing that students have varying learning preferences, we address these diverse needs through:
**Small Group Sessions**:
Students are grouped based on their individual learning needs, ensuring tailored instruction and personalized learning.
- **Whole Group Lessons**:
Some concepts are taught to the entire class, fostering collaboration and peer learning.
To support students in building strong mathematical skills and retaining knowledge, we implement the following strategies:
1. **Regular Math Fact Drills**: Consistent practice of math facts is incorporated into the curriculum to enhance speed and accuracy in fundamental operations.
2. **Daily Spiral Reviews**: A routine review of previously covered topics is conducted to reinforce skills and concepts, fostering long-lasting comprehension and preventing gaps in knowledge.
Our curriculum is structured to establish a robust foundation for students, preparing them for more complex mathematical topics. As students demonstrate proficiency in grade-appropriate material, they will gradually move on to pre algebra.
By blending different teaching methods, skill reinforcement techniques, and a gradual progression model, our mathematics curriculum is designed to offer a comprehensive and captivating learning journey for students. Our goal is to help students cultivate a strong mathematical base and equip them with the necessary skills to tackle future academic challenges effectively.
