Computer Science is required of students in our elementary and middle schools, but why did the Westfield School Committee decide that all WHS students (starting with fall 2026 entering Freshman) will need a year of Computer Science credit to graduate?
"Computer science equips high school students with valuable skills, improves their academic and workforce outcomes, promotes equity, and aligns with labor market demand."
The best place for Freshmen to start is Web Development I. Sophomores who do well in Algebra I and are interested in technology and programming (and want an extra Science or Math credit) could start with AP CS Principles and take the AP Exam if they wish.

Program of Study Description: This is your starting point for Computer Science at WHS. Here you will learn the coding language of web pages (HTML and CSS) through a series of student choice projects. The HTML and CSS prepares you to create web-based games when you take Intro to Programming (was: "Intro to CS"). In the second half of the second quarter, you will create a digital portfolio website with WordPress, which over a third of websites are made with. The Wordpress portfolio project prepares you to make websites for real clients if you take the Free Web Clinic (Spring semester only).
You will be learning a new language, and need to gain fluency (like conversation practice when learning French) so that you have the skill to create projects you would want to keep (which you can).
Anyone! The sooner you take this (Freshman and Sophomore years) the sooner you can take our advanced courses, Free Web Clinic, Programming and the Web Internship (where you get paid to make websites for real clients). In the Free Web Clinic, students create academic portfolios of their school or afterschool work to help with college application, employment, or just self-reflection.
We use an online tutorial called CodeHS (the Picasso course) to build skills between projects. If it turns out that the course is too hard or goes to fast for you, that's fine. You can do the CodeHS projects. They are not as much fun, with less choice, but you can take the class at your own pace. Your grade is based on how far you get in the time we have.
Here are some exemplary portfolios from the past two years:
Sites that students were paid to work on:
Go Fresh Mobile Market - Muhammad's paying client.
Gray Catbird Gift Shop - Brandon's paying client.
Valley to Valley - funding hydropower for an indigenous community in Ecuador. Brandon's paying client.
The Free Web Clinic - our Free Clinic site. Alec re-did the theme.
Sheila Connally Photos - you know Ms. Connally probably!
