Dear students and families,
I am proud to present you with the suite of elective unit choices for study at Belconnen High School. They represent our commitment to a diverse and engaging curriculum where students love to learn. We present options to students across all of our faculty areas, including rare and unique subjects such as ‘Extended Visual Art’, ‘Caring for Country’, ‘Sustainability’, and ‘Role Playing Games’.
We know that where students have choice over what they study, they connect more deeply with the content and take greater responsibility for their learning. In elective subjects, students often enhance their understanding of how they learn best and begin their journey towards a fulfilling career working in areas of passion and interest.
This guide endeavours to reflect these beliefs by:
Providing a description of each subject
Informing about expected learning intentions as articulated by the Australian Curriculum
Advising about further links to local college curriculum
Each unit description will also indicate major excursions and significant assessment items, where relevant.
Taken collectively, we hope you find sufficient information provided to make informed choices about elective options for years 8, 9 and 10.
Regards,
John Alston-Campbell
Deputy Principal
Belconnen High School
At Belconnen High School, years 8, 9 and 10 students study two electives in each semester.
Students will use Web Preferences to select their preferences. Details about access will be sent to students’ schoolsnet email prior to the system opening. Students must be logged in to schoolsnet to access the form.
Students can access the web preferences website here.
Students will be allocated their first preferences where possible, with the additional ‘reserve’ subjects being used in cases where classes are full or not available because of competing lines.
Students should order their preferences according to their priorities. Where there are clashes, a student’s reserve will be used in place of their least preferred subject, if possible.
Students who submit their forms after the deadline will not be considered in the first round of class allocations and will be allocated to classes that are available in the order in which they submit their forms.
Some subjects are designated as able to be repeated in subsequent semesters. This means that students may choose that subject again even if they have studied it already.
Please see the relevant subject teacher if you have any queries about studying a unit again.
If a unit can only be studied once, then do not choose it again. Students risk being allocated to make up the numbers of other units if they incorrectly choose a unit they have already studied.
Please read the elective outlines in this guide carefully. Most electives are for one semester. We also offer elective classes that run for a full year, and offer students a greater depth of learning opportunities.
