Students must complete a full year of either Health and Physical Education (HPE), Healthy Lifestyle Choices or Volleyball Academy. Students can also apply for the Sports Academy courses to enhance and deepen their understanding in a range of sports. Students who choose Healthy Lifestyle Choices as their compulsory HPE choice are not able to choose Sports Academy as choice subjects. Students are limited to a total of 3 semester courses (4 for Sports Academy students) in Year 9.

Students will also study a range of health topics such as self-esteem, relationships, diversity, gender and sexual health within the SHINE program.

The course builds on Year 8 learning by refining basic volleyball skills and integrating foundational game tactics- such as positioning, effective communication and purposeful play. Students are introduced to strategic analysis of their own and others' movement patterns using video and data. The course also includes a sports education approach where students participate in volleyball seasons and reflect on health topics such as sexual health and respectful relationships. An additional sport (Basketball) is introduced to encourage transferable movement and teamwork skills.

While developing a connection to the natural environment, students will also develop the knowledge and understanding that will allow them to engage in outdoor activities in a safe and sustainable way. Students will develop an understanding of team building and group dynamics, minimal impact techniques, basic first aid, equipment selection, nutrition, navigation and camp craft before applying these during a 3-day hiking and camping experience to Mount Crawford Forest.
Assessment is flexible and differentiated to student needs within 3 key areas;

There are no specific requirements for Year 9 Outdoor Education however a reasonable level of fitness, willingness to be outdoors and desire to undertake a 3-day tent-based camp are desirable.
Subject fee: $225. This contributes to camps (bus hire, instructor fees, equipment hire), excursions (aquatics equipment hire, instructor fees) and specialised equipment (trangias, tents, jackets, etc).
Sports Academy courses aim to improve the skill and knowledge base of students in the following specific sports: netball, AFL, basketball and soccer. Although each individual sport has specific course content they all have particular themes. These are: the development of games-specific skills, development and application of tactics and strategies, development of a sports-specific fitness program and the development of leadership and coaching skills.
Individual courses have different assessment processes but all include practical, theoretical and collaboration elements to them.
A high skill level or potentially high skill level and a genuine enthusiasm for the chosen sport are prerequisites of this course. Students apply for these courses and undergo physical testing and will need to be recommended by their previous PE teacher.
