The Roots and Shoot Model of Youth Leadership and Advocacy
During the 2022-2023 School Year the members of the Student Leadership Council were surveyed to see what activities they were interested in participating in as student leaders. One of the choices on the survey was " "Random Acts of Leadership". The student leadership council planning committee considered it a call to action to provide students with opportunities to LEAD. When the opportunity to form a Youth Leadership Council at Ditmas for 8th grade students became available the committee jumped at the chance to create the council! Although YLCs are usually for high school students or young adults, this year 8th grade students to participated in this GREAT program!
The focus of the YLC curriculum is leadership and advocacy with a heart! The curriculum for the after-school program was informed by the Roots and Shoots Compassionate Traits - Roots & Shoots (rootsandshoots.org) to highlight local leadership and the teach the UN curriculum Resources | The World's Largest Lesson (globalgoals.org) to highlight global leadership. The connection between the local community needs and the connection to the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs were explore through out the program.
