The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles’ Online Knowledge Test Application (OKTA) allows high school students ages 15 and older to take the driver’s permit test at Martin Van Buren High School, reducing the time spent by students and their parents at the DMV office. The test is presented in an easy-to-use computer format and is offered in a variety of languages.
This free test is administered online and takes less than one class period. Student high school ID and permission slip must be provided on the day of testing. Upon successful completion of the test, further NYS paperwork will be provided to the future driver. This paperwork with a barcode must be brought to the DMV where the new driver will be issued a permit.
If the student doesn't pass, they can retake the test as often as they need to. It is recommended students study the driver's manual further before retesting. It typically takes 20 minutes to complete the test.
