There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done.
One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow,
so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.”

Reconnecting through Theater: Being in the Moment
Session Three: June 9, 2022
With our PD facilitators and guest artists–Moisés Kaufman, Barbara Pitts McAdams & the Tectonic Theater Project and Broken Box Mime–we gather together to end our year in a moment, in the moment. We continue to prioritize socio-emotional well-being and creative play for our students, but also for ourselves We build upon our inspiring work of centering student creative expression, personal identity and making meaning through artistic exploration. We note the hard work, intention, care and collaboration it takes to make a theatrical joyful noise.
Grounded in the principles of Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education (CR-SE), this year’s Citywide Arts Professional Learning content charges us to:
● BUILD community and develop leadership skills among theater teachers, recognizing our collective spirit and honoring our diverse backgrounds, training, and unique perspectives.
● SUPPORT student and teacher wellness and social-emotional learning by building trusting communities in our classrooms that nurture students’ diverse identities as individuals and as artists.
● EXAMINE how we plan and teach to further anchor our work in equity and positive mindsets that honor what students already bring to the table.
● FOSTER student and teacher exploration of artistic technique and literacy to support individual and collective creative expression
● CULTIVATE student agency by examining the historical, cultural, and social roles of the theater and artists in society and their relevance to our students
● LEVERAGE newly acquired technology skills to customize the learning experience, foster collaboration, and provide new resources for teachers and students.
Thank you all for your ongoing commitment to the seismic intersection of theater, student voice and community. Have a great day together, a rejuvenating summer and love, believe, do and mostly live.
