Valerie Mahase is an Academic Services Intervention [AIS] Coordinator within District 15. She has a deep understanding of literacy content knowledge, pedagogy, and assessment which was cultivated during her years as an Instructional Coach for the Universal Literacy Initiative. Her literacy expertise led her to the AIS Coordinator role, where she works with District 15 schools to facilitate the development of their multi-tiered systems of support, addressing the literacy needs of their students. She collaborates with all stakeholders to identify appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve students’ literacy achievement.


With over two decades in NYC’s Department of Education, Valerie’s broad range of expertise in elementary education comes from many years of teaching gifted and talented students, as well as teaching and coaching within multiple NYC Public School settings, serving students with Individualized Education Plans and Multilingual Learners. Valerie has a Master’s Degree in Special Education, with licenses for District and School Building Leadership. She’s a lifelong New Yorker and resides in Brooklyn with her husband, two sons, and their Havanese. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, photographing, and creating videos of her family’s favorite recipes.
