Effective Math Teaching Practices

  • A centralized planner that outlines key dates, meetings, deadlines, and events for school staff to stay organized and informed. 

  • A structured framework outlining the key concepts, skills, and practices students are expected to master at each grade level to build mathematical proficiency. 

  • Use the links in this site to access trend data for the 3-8 NYS Math Assessments.  Click on the standard within the spreadsheet to view all of the released items aligned to it.

  • Your Go-To-Hub for math resources.

  • The NYC Math Resources site provides educators with curated instructional resources, professional learning opportunities, and guidance aligned with New York City’s mathematics curriculum and standards to support effective teaching and student learning. 

  • an overview of the New York State Grades 3–8 Mathematics Tests, including their structure, alignment with the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, test format, allowable tools, and additional resources to support educator preparation and instructional planning. 

  • GeoGebra is a platform to connect enthusiastic teachers and students and offer them a new way to explore and learn about math. 

  • Problem-Attic is a website that provides teachers with a database of questions from state and national assessments to create tests and review sheets. 

  • CodeCogs is an online equation editor that lets you create mathematical equations using LaTeX or MathML.  

  • Canva is helpful to teachers by allowing them to easily create visually engaging learning materials like presentations, worksheets, infographics, and even short videos. 

  • A collection of past standardized math exams that provide students with valuable practice and insight into test formats, question types, and state learning standards. 

  • A collaborative planning guide for 3-8 math educators, focusing on data analysis, instructional strategies, and student engagement to enhance learning outcomes. 

  • Effective math teaching practices foster deep understanding by emphasizing conceptual learning, student discourse, problem-solving, and the use of visual models and real-world applications.
