We look forward to welcoming you and your child in-person on September 4. To ensure a smooth transition, we wanted to share with you pertinent information about our school opening.
Our school hours are from 8:00 to 2:20 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On the first day of school at 8:00 a.m., students in first and second grade will use the side door #2 on 87th Street and go straight into the cafeteria and sit by the table with their class number. The classes will be escorted to the classrooms at 8:00 a.m. Note that dismissal on the first day of school is at 2:20 p.m., regular time, through the same door #2 that was used in the morning.
On the second day of school, students in first and second grades will be walking inside the school through the main entrance and into the cafeteria where they will congregate before heading to the classroom at 8:00 a.m.
On the first day of school, you will see three placards posted on the front side of the school, one for each kindergarten class, indicating the class number and the teacher’s name. Kindergarten students will begin lining up in a single-file line at 7:55 a.m., and parents must supervise their children until they enter the building.
At 8:00 a.m., the classroom teacher will come out to greet you and your child. The teacher will call each student by name and place a name tag around his or her neck. Once all students have been accounted for, the class will proceed into the building through side door #3. This is the time to say your goodbyes.
Dismissal on the first day of school will be at 2:20 p.m. through the same door used in the morning. Please note that the name tag your child receives will be sent home on the first day; we kindly ask that you have your child wear it again on the following day.
From the very first day of school, Pre-K students will attend a full school day. On the first day, the teacher will meet parents and children outside the main entrance at 8:00 a.m. and parents will accompany their children upstairs to the classroom along with the teacher. Beginning on the second day, parents will escort their children directly to the classroom through the main entrance. Upon arrival, they will pick up an escort card from the Safety Agent and, after drop-off, return the card to the Safety Agent as they exit.
From the very first day of school, 3-K students will attend a full school day. On the first day, the teacher will meet parents and children outside the main entrance at 8:00 a.m., and parents will accompany their children upstairs to the classroom along with the teacher. Beginning on the second day, parents will escort their children directly to the classroom through the main entrance. Upon arrival, they will pick up an escort card from the Safety Agent and, after drop-off, return the card to the Safety Agent as they exit.
Breakfast for all grades K-2 (not 3-K or Pre-K as they eat in the classroom) will be from 7:30 – 7:55 AM. Students should enter the building through the main entrance.
Students will be dismissed through the same door as they entered which is as follows:
3-K: 2:20 PM – Exit 1 (37th Avenue)
Parents will enter through the Main Door, receive a student escort card from the Safety Agent's desk, pick up their children from the classroom and return the escort card at the end. They will leave through the Main Door as well.
Kindergarten: 2:20 PM – Exit 3 (37th Avenue)
Grade 1: 2:20 PM – Exit 2 (87th Street)
Grade 2: 2:20 PM – Exit 2 (87th Street)
Teachers will be leading the class line at dismissal and escort the children to the dismissal area.
Children who are not picked up by an adult or older sibling will be brought to the cafeteria and left under the supervision of the school aide on duty. Another school aide will contact the parents of the child and only release the child to a parent/guardian who is listed on the emergency contact card by the front door. It is essential for parents to include the names of persons permitted to pick up their child. All parents and guardians must present identification to pick up a child.
Dismissal procedures will not change due to inclement weather. Parents are encouraged to listen to daily forecasts, particularly for rainy or snowy weather, and send their children with umbrellas and raincoats, hats and gloves.
As we commemorate the events of September 11th, we come together to honor the lives of the heroes who perished in this tragedy. Our school was named after one of those heroes, Firefighter Christopher A. Santora.
On Thursday, September 11, our entire school community will remember the sacrifice and bravery of many of our fellow New Yorkers and NYC Firefighters by presenting a Commemorative Assembly Program for Students. A read aloud on 9/11 will be conducted and songs and poems of peace, heroism and patriotism will be presented by our students.
“Meet the Teacher Night” will be held virtually on Wednesday, September 17, for all grades 3-K through 2nd Grade from 4-7 p.m. Each teacher will be available in the following manner: 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for a 45-minute presentation. A link will be sent.
During this meeting, your child’s teacher will speak with you about our expectations for the 2025-2026 school year. The teacher will also discuss homework policies, the school’s code of behavior, safety and health procedures, attendance policy and other very important information.
The cluster team (Music, Physical Education and Theater) will be conducting a group presentation for a 45-minute session at 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
