2025-2026: Leveraging AI for Remote Learning
2025-2026: Leveraging AI for Remote Learning
In January 2026, NYCDOE transitioned to a remote snow day. To provide students with engaging, independent work, we utilized various AI tools to create a comprehensive literacy module:
Contextual Reading Comprehension: We used ChatGPT to generate a "snow day" passage specifically tailored for 3rd-grade students. By prompting the AI to focus on the local weather event, we ensured the content resonated with what students were seeing outside their own windows. We also included state-test-style multiple-choice questions to reinforce critical thinking.
Seamless Digital Integration: The passage and questions were integrated into a Google Form, allowing for easy distribution via Google Classroom as an independent, accessible activity.
Interactive Visual Storytelling: To further enhance engagement, we used the Gemini Storyboard Gem to transform the snow day theme into a vibrant digital storybook. This served as a fantastic tool for a synchronous read-aloud.
Dynamic Presentation Formatting: We exported the storyboard as a PDF and captured high-quality screenshots to build a Google Slides presentation.
Focus on Literary Elements: Finally, we prompted AI to develop targeted "stopping point" questions. These were strategically placed throughout the slides to help students analyze literary elements—such as setting, mood, and character reaction—within the context of their own shared community experience.
2024-2025 Project: Inventions in Our Community
In HMH Into Reading Module 8, students will listen to, read, and engage with a variety of texts and media focused on inventors and their inventions. The emphasis on nonfiction will allow students to identify the author’s purpose and central idea, which will enhance their understanding of unfamiliar texts. In addition, students will explore narrative poetry and opinion pieces to gain knowledge across different genres.
As they expand their vocabulary and synthesize what they have learned about the topic, students will discover how ideas, determination, support, and hard work can foster an environment where anything is possible. During the writing component, with guidance from Digital Age Learning team members, students will research inventions that have made an impact in their community. They will choose one invention to investigate, explaining how it works, identifying its inventor, discussing its positive contributions, and sharing their opinions on its benefits to the community. Ultimately, students will create a digital presentation using the Book Creator app to showcase their findings.
