Our Process of Learning
In HMH Into Reading Module 7, students listen to, read, and engage with a variety of texts focused on how individuals can make a difference in their communities and beyond. Through a balance of literary and informational texts, students examine characters and real people who demonstrate courage, responsibility, and perseverance. This focus allows students to analyze key ideas, determine central messages, and understand how actions can lead to positive change.
Throughout the module, students explore multiple genres, including realistic fiction, informational texts, and opinion pieces, to build knowledge across topics and strengthen comprehension skills. Students participate in close reading experiences that support identifying text evidence, understanding the author’s message, and making connections between ideas presented in the text.
As students expand their vocabulary and synthesize what they have learned, they use Thinking Maps, such as circle maps to brainstorm ideas and multi-flow maps to analyze causes and effects of actions that help individuals make a difference. These visual tools support students in organizing their thinking and preparing for writing.
During the writing component, students apply their learning by planning and writing an opinion piece about ways people can make a difference in their community. Students support their opinions with reasons and evidence from texts and clearly explain how actions contribute to positive change.
Ultimately, students publish their final work using Book Creator, where they create a digital piece to showcase their writing, ideas, and learning. Students reflect on how the lessons from the module connect to their own lives and consider ways they can make a difference in their school and community. Through reading, writing, discussion, and digital publishing, students strengthen their literacy skills while developing an understanding that even small actions can lead to meaningful change.
