I.S. 125 SPELLING BEE STUDENT INFORMATION
Everyone will receive a list of words to study for the spelling bee and it will be your job, as a contestant, to familiarize yourself with the words.
You and your class are the CONTESTANTS. Your teacher(s) is/are the PRONOUNCER(S) and leader of the classroom spelling bee.
During the first round, ALL students will participate. You will all be read a word from the pronouncer and will say the word back to the pronouncer.
YOU WILL SPELL THE WORD GIVEN TO YOU (hopefully, you will spell the word correctly). Once the spelling of a word is started, you can NOT re-spell the word in a different way. For example, spell cat. If you start spelling it K-A- and realize your mistake, you cannot restart to spell it C-A-T. You must continue with the letters you already stated, in the order that you stated it.
If you want more information about the word, you can ask the PRONOUNCER for:
The word to be repeated
The definition
The word in a sentence
The part of speech
The language of origin
The alternate pronunciation
You must say each letter of the word distinctly (so the pronouncer can CLEARLY hear you!).
If you spell the word correctly, you will stay in the contest! ☺
If you spell the word incorrectly, you will sit quietly and watch the rest of the contest.
If the person before you misspells their word, you will NOT be asked to spell this word-you will get another word to spell.
**Your pronouncer will discuss the FINAL round with you for the championship!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
Your ELA teachers received a spelling bee preparation packet with the rules, special reminders, and study lists. Ask your teacher for a copy if you are interested.
