The Unteachables by Gordon Korman
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Recommended by: A middle schooler
Reading: On Sora
Blurb: Isolated from the rest of the student body in Room 117, the Unteachables are just that—an infamous group of middle school misfits with a colorful array of quirks, they are considered simply irredeemable. To add to the fun, their newly assigned teacher Mr. Kermit is the most burned-out teacher in all of Greenwich. Once a rising star, Mr. Kermit’s career was rocked by a cheating scandal some 26 years prior, and now the only thing he cares about is counting down the days until early retirement. When a gutsy vuvuzela heist rallies them all together, the Unteachables and Mr. Kermit might finally get their true shot at redemption after all.
My Thoughts: I loved this book! Sometimes we need to be reminded why we teach and that every student learns in their best way!
All American Muslim Girl by Nadine Jolie Courtney
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Recommended by: Found on the Shelf
Reading: From the I.S. 10 Library
Blurb: Allie Abraham has it all going for her—she's a straight-A student, with good friends and a close-knit family, and she's dating cute, popular, and sweet Wells Henderson. One problem: Wells's father is Jack Henderson, America's most famous conservative shock jock...and Allie hasn't told Wells that her family is Muslim. As Allie witnesses ever-growing Islamophobia in her small town and across the nation, she begins to embrace her faith—studying it, practicing it, and facing hatred and misunderstanding for it. Who is Allie, if she sheds the façade of the "perfect" all-American girl? What does it mean to be a "Good Muslim?" And can a Muslim girl in America ever truly fit in?
My Thoughts: I am really loving this book! It's so smart and interesting and I am learning about what it's like to be a Muslim. I can relate a little becuase I am an American Jewish woman and I have similar feelings to Allie in this book.
Nuestro Pacto by Ryan Andrews
In the Country We Love by Diane Guerrero
Genre: Memoir
Recommended by: Her! On a podcast!
Read on: Audible, read by the author
Blurb: Diane Guerrero, the television actress from the megahit Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, was just fourteen years old on the day her parents and brother were arrested and deported while she was at school. Born in the U.S., Guerrero was able to remain in the country and continue her education, depending on the kindness of family friends who took her in and helped her build a life and a successful acting career for herself, without the support system of her family.
My thoughts: This book was incredible. I can't imagine coming home to my parents being inaccessible to me but I know that this is the reality for a lot of people. It broke my heart but also was so inspirational. I loved her in Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin and she is a wonderful story teller.
