🌟 Welcome to Our Science Class! 🌟
Class Overview
Grades K–5 | Special Education Program
Hello and welcome! I'm excited to share what our young scientists are discovering in science class this year. I serve students with a wide range of abilities and learning needs, and our classroom is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and hands-on. My goal is to make science meaningful, accessible, and fun for every student.
Our science curriculum is built around inquiry, exploration, and discovery. We focus on key topics such as:
Life Science – animals, plants, habitats, and life cycles
Earth Science – weather, seasons, rocks, and space
Physical Science – light, sound, motion, and matter
Environmental Awareness – recycling, conservation, and taking care of our planet
Hydroponics – learning how plants can grow without soil using water, light, and nutrients
Our hydroponics station is a highlight for many students! It allows them to take part in planting, observing, and caring for living plants while exploring the science behind plant growth and sustainability.
Students participate in:
Sensory-rich experiments and investigations
Interactive games and activities
Story-based science and picture-supported lessons
Group projects that build communication and social skills
Outdoor exploration when weather allows
Hands-on gardening through our hydroponics project
Visual schedules, adapted materials, and assistive technology are used to support learning and independence.
I work closely with classroom teachers, therapists, and families to support each child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. Communication is key, and I encourage parents to reach out with any questions or ideas.
Throughout the year, I’ll share updates, photos, and highlights from our science adventures, including our hydroponic garden’s progress. I love celebrating our students’ curiosity and achievements!
Thank you for your support in helping our students grow as scientists!

Hello and welcome! My name is Ms. Swann, and I’m proud to be the K–5 science teacher in our special education program. This is my 11th year teaching, and I continue to feel inspired every day by the amazing students and families I work with.
I hold a dual master’s degree and am certified in both Special Education and General Education for grades 1–6. My passion lies in helping all students regardless of their learning style feel confident, curious, and capable.
I became a teacher because I believe that every child deserves a learning experience that meets their unique needs. Science is one of the best ways to spark wonder and connection, and I love creating hands-on, engaging lessons that bring learning to life.
This year, I’m especially excited about expanding our hydroponics project! It’s a great opportunity for students to explore plant life cycles in a sensory-friendly and accessible way. We’ll also be diving into fun units on weather, space, animals, and more always with plenty of visual supports, real-life connections, and opportunities to explore.
I’m here to support your child and partner with you throughout the year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or ideas.
Looking forward to a chemically charged year of discovery in science!
