New York State (NYS) continues to release additional information about the NYS Computer Science (CS) & Digital Fluency (DF) Learning Standards and the Computer Science Certification. Please read below for updates about what you need to know and what supports are currently available from NYS and the NYC DOE. The NYC DOE CS Education team will continue to share information related to the NYS CS & DF Learning Standards and CS Certification as it is released.

NYS CS & DF Learning Standards

The New York State K12 Computer Science and Digital Fluency Learning Standards were adopted by the Board of Regents in December 2020, with the expectation that all K-12 schools will fully implement these standards by September 2024.

What You Need to Know

The NYC Computer Science Education team (CS4All) is offering training for teachers and creating materials and resources to ensure that the standards are being implemented in public school classrooms.

At this point in time, teachers and building leaders should take time to learn about how the standards are organized and which content they relate to, and begin to think about where in your classes these standards may already be taught. Participating in a CS4All program ensures that your school has the necessary curriculum and content knowledge to implement the standards.

Computer Science Certification

Teachers must hold the Computer Science Statement of Continued Eligibility (SOCE) or Computer Science certificate to teach computer science courses after September 1, 2023.

What You Need to Know

The NYC DOE is working with NYS to ensure that all teachers who are eligible for a SOCE receive one and are provided with guidance on how to become certified in computer science. To learn more about the SOCE you can go to the NYSED's Office of Teaching Initiatives website.

At this point in time, teachers should ensure they are implementing CS in their classrooms so that they can be considered for the SOCE, unless they wish to take a CS certification program. While CS certification programs are labeled as K-12, the content that is being taught is generally more for middle and high schools, as those are the grades where a certification will more likely be required.

What Supports Are Available

Hunter College’s CS Education Advanced Certificate (currently the only state-approved Advanced Certificate program). More information can be found on their information page.
