Frequently Asked Questions
You must be registered on Career Pathways Portal (CPP) in order to apply, earn credit and receive payment for your internship and WBL experiences. This portal is managed by the DOE. Host employers, Students, and Work-Based Learning Coordinators are required to coordinate and input data to this portal regularly during an internship.
Then, click here and follow these instructions to create your profile.
As a 16-24 year old youth (Older Youth), you will participate in a work based experience that will match your interests and provide enriching career exploration, help foster leadership, networking and develop numerous skills. You will earn the New York State minimum wage of $16.50 an hour and may work up to 25 hours per week for six weeks in July and August.
As a 14-15 year old (Younger Youth), you will gain specific knowledge and skills via Project Based Learning (PBL) over the course of 6 weeks. You will receive a stipend of $700.
If you miss your deadline to upload your documents, the system will automatically place you back into the lottery and SYEP will no longer be able to enroll you. SYEP has no control over who the lottery picks and has no way of knowing if you will be picked again. This is why it's so important to upload your documents before the deadline! Please keep a careful eye on your email in case you are picked again so you can upload your documents on time and be safely enrolled.
Yes, you must have a SSN to be paid for an internship. However, an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) is also acceptable for a Workplace Challenge if the student is receiving a stipend.
Typically, you cannot participate in two programs at the same time. However, you may participate in other WBL experiences funded by DOE Programs (such as ISP, FRNYC) or DYCD Programs (SYEP, CRSYEP, WLG), provided the dates do not overlap.
You start working after you receive an Official Enrollment Confirmation Email. Any time worked prior to the enrollment date will be considered volunteer time and will not be compensated.
You can sign up for direct deposit on the participants portal as soon as you receive a confirmation email of your enrollment.
You will receive a payroll card within 14 days after your official enrollment date mailed to the address in your profile unless you sign up for Direct Deposit. If you didn't receive a payroll card, report it to your work-based learning coordinator immediately after you complete the "Never Received Payroll Card" Google Form using the link below.
For DOE funded programs, you can request a new one by calling 1-877-474-0010. Please note there may be a replacement fee.
For DYCD funded programs, please reach out to your CareerREADY provider.
A provider is the organization that collects your application, enrolls you and places you in your summer experience. Commonpoint Queens (Samuel Field YM&YWHA, Inc.) is one of the providers of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). They handle recruitment, review required documents, enroll participants, facilitate orientation, develop worksites partnerships, and create PBL curriculum.
A Worksite Supervisor is the onsite “boss” or person you report to while at your worksite.
It will depend on your school schedule and whether it can accommodate both your work placement schedule and school.
WBL events are planned opportunities for students to interact with companies or community partners at school, on the job, or digitally, employing technology to connect students and employers in different places.
Unless you are placed to work at Bayside High School, the worksite catalog will be sent to you via email. The worksite catalog is only sent out after you've uploaded your documents, received confirmation that you've been enrolled, and completed your 10 Hats & Ladders tasks AND your 1 hour virtual orientation session over Zoom. Most participants do not receive the worksite catalog for a few weeks after they are first selected from the lottery.
Participants are NOT allowed to transfer worksites without the approval of the SYEP Team and without prior notification to their current site supervisor.
Unfortunately for those aged 16-24, SYEP can only pay you for actual days worked. We do not offer any sick or make up hours. Please make sure you communicate with your supervisor as soon as you know you will be missing work.
You may not have worked your full hours. Please keep in mind that all hours must be approved by your worksite supervisor and any inaccuracies will be corrected. Additionally, standard taxes are taken out of your weekly paycheck. If you still believe you have been paid incorrectly, please reach out to the work-based learning coordinators.
Being in a professional work environment, it is important that you also look the part in order to give off a good impression. Dressing appropriately consists of business casual clothing such as long pants, button-down shirts/polos, long dresses and skirts, and closed-toe shoes. The dress code may vary depending on your workplace. If you are unsure about the dress code in your specific job, please ask your supervisor.
You will receive a payroll card within 14 days after your official enrollment date mailed to the address in your profile unless you sign up for Direct Deposit. You are paid once your payroll has been approved and committed by the person administering the program (WBL coordinator, Grant Associates, CareerREADY SYEP Provider). Refer to the Payroll Schedule posted in Google Classroom for exact paydays.
We highly encourage you to sign up for direct deposit.
