2021 Queens Borough Arts Festival

Cups

Corona Arts & Sciences Academy

Performing Arts Teacher: Rachel Scott

Principal: Beth Hert

At CASA, we value the arts as an essential subject for students to achieve a well-rounded education. Students at CASA have access to 5 different arts programs: Dance, Band, Chorus, Visual Arts & Media Arts. For our 2021 virtual showcase, eighth grade dancers learned a fun tap routine at home. This dance proves that dance is for everyone! You don't need expensive shoes or a dance studio to become a great dancer. I hope you enjoy our tap routine to "Cups", a song from the hit movie, Pitch Perfect. Through tap, students learned rhythm & coordination, as well as dance history and understanding tap as an American style of dance that was created from Irish clogging and African percussive dances in the Five Points neighborhood of NYC!

Performers: Jheyliss Aracena, Karol Arias, Edeling Ferreira, Keilyn Gordillo, Lesley Muy, Jasmine Nunez, Valerey Pepin Valerio, Helen Quichimbo-Puma, Eriana Rodriguez, Kelvin Rodriguez, Marlene Meyo-Hernandez

I love my skin

The Linden-Renaissance Middle School 192Q

Performing Arts Teacher: Teresa Slaughter-Von Rippen

Principal: Harriett Diaz

The Linden Renaissance MS 192Q, AKA, I.S. 192Q, is located in Queens New York, under the guidance of Principal Diaz. She had a vision to offer dance. In September 2017, her vision came to pass when Ms. Von Rippon, Dance Specialist/Teacher came on board. She began teaching various dance styles and techniques to all grades 6-8th and immediately launched the RMS 192Q Dance Squad Ensemble; performing over 60 shows between 2017 to present. The soloist performing, has been a member of the RMS 192Q Dance Squad Ensemble, since 2018 and is in her senior year.

The dancer was inspired by the song, and felt it was relatable as a young teen who has been overlooked. This piece was about empowerment, overcoming barriers, and embracing who they are. She was able to clearly create and perform the dance and exhibit the ability to unquestionably express the theme with intent.

I'll Be There

MS 379 College Point Collaborative

Performing Arts Teacher: Alison Cherrington

Principal: Renee Klager

We are a new school in College Point actively growing our arts offerings. Sixth graders this year have been honing their singing skills as we make connections about repertoire, learn some note reading, and analyze music. Jireh, the soloist in this piece, is a particularly dedicated singer and selected this piece to submit for the festival. The message of this song is particularly relevant during this difficult pandemic situation. This song allowed Jireh to expand his expressive abilities and vary his musical approach to different parts of the song.

"Shelly's Monologue"

MS 379 College Point Collaborative

Performing Arts Teacher: Gabriel Eden

Principal: Renee Klager

College Point Collaborative Middle School prides itself on its integration of arts disciplines into all core content curriculum areas, allowing our students to explore, engage in, and respond critically to the visual, expressive, creative and fine arts. We believe that this exposure and integration of the arts into our curriculum expands our learners' knowledge and enables our children to become well rounded citizens who appreciate, and can express themselves in multiple ways.

I selected this monologue from Sam Shepard's Buried Child because it provides a considerable challenge in terms of the actor's given circumstances and shifts in tactics. It's a tricky speech to navigate, and it really forces the performer to submerge themselves in the imagined scene.

For many of my sixth grade students, this performance was the first lengthy speech they've ever endeavored to perform. Each student could choose from three different monologues, this being the "hardest" of the three. Agatha challenged herself and succeeded. I feel she gained a tremendous amount of confidence from this experience.

The Hill We Climb (A Reflection)

The Gordon Parks School

Performing Arts Teacher: Valerie Williams

Principal: Chayvonne Harper

The Gordon Parks School has been riding out this pandemic like every school in our country and the world. A lot of our students’ families are essential workers and some experienced loss during this time. This piece was inspired by the poem Amanda Gorman gave at the Inauguration this year. This piece was performed by four 8th graders in our Black History Presentation (on Zoom for the school, the community and families). It was the finale and an awesome encourager for every attendant. America one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for ALL.

Performers: Jenny Casseus, Kyla Christian, Nia Humphrey, Gianna Palmer

The Show Must Go Online!

I.S. 73 The Frank Sansiveri Intermediate School

Performing Arts Teacher: Annie Smith

Principal: Michael Casale

Our after-school (typically audition-based) musical theatre program fused with our Junior Thespian Society to create a group of motivated, talented students who, in the face of pandemic, still really wanted to work hard! We meet each Thursday afternoon to rehearse, laugh and share. Our show is a metacognition of sorts, revealing what went on when the schools and theaters closed and had to "go online." This scene is in the middle of the show and portrays a character who "divas out" and makes suggestions for their production of "Brushes with Greatness." The student featured here played Annie in last year's production of "Annie" that was not able to be performed, so I feel this was a great opportunity to showcase one of our brightest stars and give her the spotlight she deserves. This piece has allowed these students to stop grieving the loss of our live theatre and celebrate what is a new and burgeoning platform to be explored! They are working on skills that would never have been touched in a typical year of drama instruction. This is our 2nd year as a Junior Thespian Troupe.

The Water gun Song

Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School

Performing Arts Teacher: Katherine Cooley

Principal: Brandon Contarsy

These two students have had theater for three years. Most students in my classes performed excerpts from this short play, The Water Gun Song. I knew these children could do more. When our schedule changed from blended to remote, I saw these students one more period/week and I knew that was my opportunity to have them perform the entire thing.

The play itself was part of materials made available to us in honor of Juneteenth. This play and the others has helped students explore their own thought and experiences in relation to people who are different than them. Working with this play gave me an opportunity to promote empathy and dialogue toward a better understanding of one another.

You're a Good Man Charlie Brown

Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School

Performing Arts Teacher: Katherine Cooley

Principal: Brandon Contarsy

MS 74's Hawthorne players were three weeks away from performing You're A Good Man Charlie Brown last spring when the pandemic closed down everything including schools. Mrs. Cooley was determined to finish the show this year virtually with more than half the cast being brand new cast members. Charlie Brown's understudy from last year stepped right into the role of Charlie Brown and everyone is learning how to make Zoom theater work. The opening number of the show demonstrates a positive attitude even when things (or people, like Charlie Brown) are not perfect. We have all learned to endeavor to complete this production despite so much being new and challenging.

Performers: Annie Bao, Katarina Binec, Sofia Gonzalez, Ritikka Jeyachandran, Gabriella Kazos, Nara Kong, Inna Lim, Emma Marsala, Leonidas Tirella, Benjamin Tsai, Ihsan Yumak
