ABC Medley

P.S. 88Q The Seneca School

Performing Arts Teacher: Brian Dumont

Principal: Linda O'Shaughnessy

The students at PS88Q practice and record a new song every three weeks. This song is a medley of "The Alphabet Song," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," and "Baa Baa Black Sheep." This piece was chosen so students of all ages could learn the concept of a Medley as well as sing songs that they love, all of which were requested by students. The music program is open to the entire school from preK-5 to record and perform songs at home. Hundreds of students at PS88Q have been sending in recordings of themselves. Many years from now, they will have an amazing archive to look back on as they continue this curriculum. Here is just an example of some of our budding musicians!

PS 79 Dance Company has been in existence since 2012 under the direction of Andrew Jannetti. Each year students audition to be in either the 3rd grade Dance Company or the 4th and 5th grade Dance Company. This piece is performed by the 3rd Grade Company and was developed at the beginning of the Covid Pandemic. Working from home, each student developed specific phrase based on given criteria. P.S. 361Q is a new public elementary school in Woodside, Queens. P.S. 361Q students are artists, writers, scientists, engineers, athletes, mathematicians, creators, and problem solvers.

The Vocal Ambassadors, our school's first choir, was founded in 2019. Before the pandemic, we were proud to share our music at local community celebrations and school-wide events. This year, our choir continues to meet online for live rehearsals. Together we are exploring online tools for creating and recording vocal music, and we have contributed virtual performance videos to several virtual school-wide events and concerts. Students work together to select repertoire, make interpretive choices, and plan performances. In the midst of a difficult year, our students have shown an incredible commitment to making music together.

Still I Rise!

P.S. 273

Performing Arts Teachers: Niae Knight & Walker Zupan

Principal: Brenda Ward

Nestled in the heart of vibrant Richmond Hill, PS 273 is defined by its small size, close community feel, and nurturing teacher-student relationships. Nearly every student in this year's third grade class - both in person and remote - collaborated to create this performance to honor the late poet and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou as well as the powerful contributions of Black Americans more broadly. Through this project, students explored theatrical tableaux as a form of embodied storytelling and meaning making. They also examined core elements of the actor’s voice, such as tone and rhythm, and the emotional impact that the manipulation of these elements can have on an audience. In addition, much of the material featured in the performance was devised entirely by students giving them ample opportunities to step into the role of actor-director, make intentional aesthetic choices, offer one another constructive feedback, and collaborate to make the final tableaux as specific and impactful as possible. Finally, through the creation of this piece, students learned about the life and legacy of Dr. Maya Angelou and other Black, artist/freedom fighters like her such as Langston Hughes, Nina Simone and Patrisse Cullors.
