Performing Arts Teacher: Niritte Brodsky

Principal: Debbie Edmonds

P233's dance team mission is to provide a positive experience for our dancers. We strive to promote mental, physical, and spiritual development through dancing. Students express themselves through art, music, and dance by learning a new routine for the dance festival. Students will work together to perform a dance. Students will observe their teammates dancing. Students will also be able to offer feedback and reflection of their fellow dance team members.

This is a solo performance by Fernando Sanchez Fermin of a guitar selection performed at our school's virtual Spring Concert held on Thursday, May 21, 2020. According to Fernando's teacher, Ms. Hoyos, her goal was to showcase his mastery of scales and to use this mastery to read and perform guitar music on the treble staff in the first to the fourth positions with at least 85% accuracy.

Farrel Hakim is a multitalented exemplary graduating Senior of John Bowne. Farrel plays the piano and guitar and I had no idea that he sings. His selection and performance have made him into a rock star in our school community judging from the positive responses he received after he performed at the Virtual Spring Concert. I am very proud of Farrel's social conscious work in lymphoma awareness. Farrel explored, read, analyzed and performed using his own interpretation and improvisation of a popular selection. He accomplished this with more than 95% accuracy.

Townsend Harris Chorus World Music Project 2020

Townsend Harris High School

Performing Arts Teacher: Mariko Sato Berger

Principal: Brian Condon

Townsend Harris HS Chorus launched The World Music Project in January of 2020. The project aims to celebrate various languages and the music of students’ native cultures. The idea came from a casual conversation in class when the teacher asked her students if they speak a language other than English at home. Many students raised their hands and we listed more than 15 different languages. The project evolved and each student selected which language group they wanted to join. While some students were better in a language than others, they all worked to help one another. The project was completed entirely by students, with minimal direction from the teacher during the quarantine to learn and celebrate various cultures through song.

Arthur Walker is very passionate about mastering the piano. He seems to prefer and learn how to play fast paced songs. He enjoys his efforts and is very encouraged by the response of his listeners. Arthur mastered this selection in a very short period of time as he read, analyzed and accurately performed a very technical piano selection from the Baroque era.

Karen is a graduating Senior who sings and appreciates music of different styles. She works very hard at perfecting her performances and is not afraid to keep practicing and listening to herself. The student selected this piece, read the music and interpreted the song based on the style of the artist. She also requested the guitarist to accompany her along with the piano because she felt it added to the depth and meaning of the song as it was executed with more than 85% accuracy.

Chopin Mania

William Cullen Bryant High School

Performing Arts Teacher: Michael Eisenberg, Gladys Diaz Cepeda and Eleftheria Christopolous

Principal: Namita Dwarka

Several of my piano class students arranged a medley of Chopin excerpts and together with a dancer in our school conceived, directed, choreographed, performed, and filmed this performance. It includes excerpts from two nocturnes, an etude, the fantasy-impromptu, a waltz, and a prelude. These students have only studied piano for a minimum of a year and a quarter and a maximum of 2 years. This work in progress merges several discrete clips with four different pianists playing. All students including the dancer are part of our performing arts program. Rigorous study and execution of challenging musical repertoire is learned through this performance task; artistic collaboration across artistic disciplinary and media lines; development of artistic conception and realization of project. Katelyn studies dance under Dance teachers, Gladys Diaz Cepeda and Eleftheria Christopolous.

Performers: Katelyn Centeno, Jason Gonzalez, Rohit Kumar, John Fernandez, Bryant Pesantez

The John Bowne High School Chorus put up an impressive display of their vocal talent and ability to produce this virtual choir video during the COVID 19 Remote Learning response to the Pandemic. The students are to be commended because most of them never recorded themselves singing a harmonized vocal part by listening to an instrumental track. Students listened, memorized, sang and video recorded themselves singing their vocal part to an instrumental track with more than 85% performance accuracy. Many students who had difficulty in class reproducing their vocal part were able to sing just their part in isolation and they felt very accomplished. This was a very rewarding experience for the students in Chorus.
